— Physics of Motion: Egg-Drop Science Project

Egg Drop Science Project Experiential LearningThe Eight Graders concluded their unit on the physics of motion with an egg-drop project. Working in teams, the students worked to create boxes that would keep an egg intact through a fall onto a hard surface.

Egg Drop Science Project Experiential LearningThey designed, created and tested different arrangements fashioned out of a variety materials over successively higher drops. At the same time, they worked on calculations based on work earlier in the unit to determine the velocity, acceleration, and forces acting on the box and the egg.

Egg Drop Science Project Experiential LearningOn the final day, the Eighth Grade moved to the gym, where Mr. Geller was kind enough to operate the lift to drop egg boxes from greater and greater heights until there was only one unbroken egg remaining.

Congratulations to India Polacek, Mikalee Mauricio, and Marco Yaque, as well as to Jakob Gates, Oscar Hernandez and Matthew Spink. These two teams designed boxes that survived a 6-meter drop!

Hygiene DriveHygiene Drive
Our 4th Annual All-School Hygiene Drive is underway. The Sixth Grade has been diligently working on posters, Sign-up Geniuses, and presenting to Lower School classes. All items will be donated to Coastside Hope to help our local community.

Self DefenseSelf DefenseGirl Power
Before the Winter Break, girls in the Eighth Grade had the opportunity to empower themselves by learning about self-defense through a workshop led by Kristin Lynn and George Miller. Our girls discovered how to use their voice in a powerful way, as well as several techniques in self-defense.

CPR Training CPR Workshop
The Eighth Grade had the opportunity to learn CPR. George Miller and Kristin Lynn guided the students through scenarios of when the use of CPR is necessary. Students learned how to perform CPR, as well as use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

Touch Your Toes
The Middle School finished a unit on Flexibility. Students were taught static stretching and resistive stretching. The unit emphasized the importance of flexibility and how it can assist in living a healthy lifestyle and prevent injury.

Everybody Dance!
We have begun our dance unit. Students were introduced to the Electric Slide and were assigned the task of creating an updated version of the dance. This unit focuses on line dancing and choreography.

Food for Thought
The Seventh Grade watched the Morgan Spurlock documentary, Super Size Me, and reflected on how frequently food is wasted in our community. In the iLab, they are now utilizing the Design Thinking process to propose solutions for food waste here at Sea Crest. Seventh Graders will present their proposals to school administrators in the near future.

 

— Students build solar suitcases to power a school in Africa

Sixth-grade students are building Solar Suitcases to power a partner school in Kenya, Africa.

We Share Solar is an education program in Berkeley that links science and technology with international philanthropy and service. Through building the Solar Suitcase (a 12-volt DC stand-along solar system that can power lights, cell phones, and small electronic devices) students learn how solar electricity works.

After they’ve built the suitcases, students will write letters to the students in Kenya and deploy the solar units for immediate use.

— Students recognized for academic achievement

Students receive academic honors. By Sarah Griego Guz. Published in the Half Moon Bay Review on December 26th, 2017.

The end of the year is often a time for students to reflect on academic achievements. For some, the milestone marks overcoming adversity; for others, it is just one more achievement to add to their pile of accomplishments.

Six students from Half Moon Bay High School were awarded a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Siena Hinshelwood, Tatiana Ediger, Grace Carpenter, Tamlyn Schafer, Andrew Pantera and Tristan Madayag were recognized for their outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test in 2017.

Sea Crest Middle School recognized their sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders in a special award ceremony on Dec 15. Earning a place on the Crest Roll with a GPA of 3.9 or above were: Olivia Cevasco, Peyton Daley, Billy Ou, Maisie Eliashof, Ryan Marquess, Renee Casentini, Beech Basler, Ryan Rose Grout, Helen Campbell, Sydney Franklin, Alexander Koron, Mia Etheridge, Nora Flynn, Kaylani Guevara, Kay Hildebrand, Lara Keshav, Sophie Slusher, Geoffrey Guz, Isabella Murphy, Jasmine Standez, Lucas Velyvis, Ya-Hsin Dittrich-Tilton, Naomi Popple, Ashlyn Cuvelier, Cade Ford, Michael Lieu, Basel Conroy, Jocelyn Hildebrand. Receiving a place on the school honor roll were Kate Reeve, Thomas Sukkestad, Chase Urban, Kaiya Hanepen, Carla Roberts, Jordan Grisim, Emma Sandel, Harry Marquess, Jess Kammeyer, Marina Pokorny, Thomas Cevasco, Sean Andrasick, Conor O’Quigley, and India Polacek.

Dozens of high-achieving students at Cunha Intermediate School were also honored for their academic work this month.

 

— Chemistry with a Bang!

The 8th graders finished their unit on chemistry with a bang! Teams of students worked together to research, practice and present dramatic chemical reactions to an audience of 5th and 6th graders. They also had to show their understanding of the reactions by explaining them to their lower-school audiences. The 8th graders did a great job, showing off dramatic demos safely and informatively.
